Composer
Madelyn Byrne
I believe that excellent quality music and communication with a diverse audience are attainable goals in all genres of music. I have composed concert music, (acoustic and electroacoustic), soundtracks, and I've scored and performed in intermedia pieces. I enjoy writing for a wide variety of media and my goals for excellent quality music and respect for the audience are consistent throughout.

Dream Tableaux by Madelyn Byrne was one of the pieces that left the greatest impression on me during this conference. The piece is well structured and was beautifully performed by Javier Olondo on acoustic guitar. The electronics for this piece and the acoustic sounds were equally interwoven, while the selection of the processed sounds complemented and extended the sound of the acoustic guitar, a true marriage between electronics and acoustic instrument.

Welcome and thank you for visiting my web page. I invite you to explore and enjoy these music clips...

Arrival

In this piece travel serves as a metaphor for self-discovery, or its opposite — distraction. The sounds of travel and introspection — including traffic, trains, planes, breath, rain, and voice — are juxtaposed and eventually integrated. This piece explores the ongoing and  multifaceted process of self-discovery and living with integrity.

Rain, Sea and Sky
For Piano, Vibraphone and Computer-generated sounds and is a commission from the NOISE ensemble. This piece was performed in the 2007-2008 season. The clip is a short excerpt from that piece with a MIDI rendition of the acoustic parts.

Dream Tableaux
(Colin McAllister, guitarist)
This piece is a composition for guitar and computer commissioned by Colin McAllister. This piece is a reflection on various dream scenes, all having to do with various forms of travel, and on Alan Lightman's book, Einstein's Dreams. In both the scenes and in the Lightman book, time and reality take on fluid and poetic qualities. The reflections may be poignant, adventurous and exciting, anxious and frustrating, or peaceful and meditative.

Northern Flight
(Peter Gach, pianist)
This piece is a composition for piano and computer generated sounds. The power and beauty of Winter hold endless fascination for me, perhaps because I grew up in Florida and New York. This piece is an expression of that fascination.

Horse Vet Theme and Excerpt
This music was composed for the Emmy award winning science documentary Horse Vet, directed by Brad Gardner. I was asked to compose a theme with a strong identity for the show. I also created some music to portray the beauty, strength and freedom of horses running free.

"...I was attracted to her use of electroacoustic materials and her spacious, resonant harmonies. Out of our discussions came "Dream Tableaux" for solo guitar and computer. I performed the piece throughout the US in 2006 as part of my Albus/Ater tour, where it was very well received by a variety of different audiences.
Madelyn is the kind of composer performers enjoy working with: timely, flexible, professional, and a very pleasant person. I look forward to collaborating on future projects."

"Your Northern Flight is a beautiful piece. It shows the wild personality hidden in you, and leaves the pianist a space to communicate through his/her own interpretation and character. Thank you for including me in your music. I'm glad to have a chance to work
with you!"

"Madelyn's music perfectly captures the feeling we want for the theme for Horse Vet, and her score heightens the dramatic scenes to the point of bringing forth tears of both sadness and joy. Her music so exactly creates the background for the show that I can't imagine anyone having done a better job. Listen for yourself and you will hear what I mean."

Northern Flight gives pianists the possibility of combining absolute freedom, in the interpretation of quasi improvisatory sections, with absolute precision in order to transmit the beauty of the score at other times. I enjoyed the fact that the tape acts also as an instrument that responds, sometimes, to cues of the piano. It is a powerful thing to feel that one presses a key and a whole spectrum of sounds seem to come out of this one sound from the piano, and vice versa.

I enjoy collaborating with a wide variety of musicians and across disciplines. I am open and flexible with regard to commissions and I am also sensitive to the varying budgets that many in the arts may have. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions.
