Madelyn Byrne’s In a Winter Landscape provides a full and atmospherically resonant opening, with a bass flute creating lyrical lines over some highly attractive electronic sounds which work in sympathy with the soloist, making it sound as if the performer is in a vast space, “an austere winter landscape after a powerful storm.” - Dominy Clements, Musicweb website

INTERNATIONAL COMPUTER MUSIC CONFERENCE 2006
Dream Tableaux by Madelyn Byrne was one of the pieces that left the greatest impression on me during this conference. The piece is well structured and was beautifully performed by Javier Olondo on acoustic guitar. The electronics for this piece and the acoustic sounds were equally interwoven, while the selection of the processed sounds complemented and extended the sound of the acoustic guitar, a true marriage between electronics and acoustic instrument.

Commissioning
I enjoy collaborating with a wide variety of musicians and across disciplines. I am open and flexible with regard to commissions and I am also sensitive to the varying budgets that many in the arts may have. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions.

In A Winter Landscape
This piece is an introspective composition intended to convey an austere Winter landscape, after a powerful storm. The storm, having cleared out the old growth, has made room for new life. It is inspired by the work of Arvo Part and John Cage.

Northern Flight (Peter Gach, pianist)
This piece is a composition for piano and computer generated sounds. The power and beauty of Winter hold endless fascination for me, perhaps because I grew up in Florida and New York. This piece is an expression of that fascination.

Arrival
In this piece travel serves as a metaphor for self-discovery, or its opposite — distraction. The sounds of travel and introspection — including traffic, trains, planes, breath, rain, and voice — are juxtaposed and eventually integrated. This piece explores the ongoing and multifaceted process of self-discovery and living with integrity.

Rain, Sea and Sky
For Piano, Vibraphone and Computer-generated sounds and is a commission from the NOISE ensemble. This piece was performed in the 2007-2008 season. The clip is a short excerpt from that piece with a MIDI rendition of the acoustic parts.

Dream Tableaux
(Colin McAllister, guitarist)
This piece is a composition for guitar and computer commissioned by Colin McAllister. This piece is a reflection on various dream scenes, all having to do with various forms of travel, and on Alan Lightman's book, Einstein's Dreams. In both the scenes and in the Lightman book, time and reality take on fluid and poetic qualities. The reflections may be poignant, adventurous and exciting, anxious and frustrating, or peaceful and meditative.

Horse Vet Theme and Excerpt
This music was composed for the Emmy award winning science documentary Horse Vet, directed by Brad Gardner. I was asked to compose a theme with a strong identity for the show. I also created some music to portray the beauty, strength and freedom of horses running free.
